Three generations of one family, and one stone at a time.
Every memorial we make is designed, engraved and installed by a member of the Gaulden family. Eight showrooms across the Carolinas, and the shop where all of it is cut.
There is nothing you need to know before you call.
Most families reach us with no idea where to begin, and that is normal. You do not need to have chosen a stone, a colour, or the words. You do not need to have decided anything at all.
Tell us the name of the cemetery, if you have it. We will take it from there, at whatever pace suits you. Nothing is ordered, and nothing is cut, until you have seen exactly how it will look and told us it is right.
Whatever the cemetery allows, we can make.
Upright monuments and companion stones, slants, bevels, grass level markers, bronze, heart monuments, granite benches, columbaria, private mausoleums, and markers for infants and for pets.
Every stone below was made by this family.
Photographed where they stand, in cemeteries across the Carolinas. No two are alike, because no two people are.

It began with a stone cutter who wanted to do it for his neighbours.
In 1961 Jack Gaulden, a master stone cutter, and his wife Charlotte established Gaulden Monuments in Rock Hill. He wanted to share what he could do with the families around him. That was the whole of the plan.
Three generations later it is still owned and operated by the Gaulden family. A third generation member of the family personally designs, engraves and installs each and every memorial we make. Not a subcontractor, and not a supplier in another state.
We serve the Carolinas and the southeast, and now families across the country through our online shop. We have grown, but the way the work is done has not changed.

Four steps, and we carry most of them.
You will not be handed a catalogue and left to work it out. Someone from this family stays with it from the first conversation to the day it is set in the ground.
Come in, or call
Walk into any of the eight showrooms and stand in front of the stones, or call and we will talk it through. Bring the cemetery name if you have it. If you do not, that is fine.
We design it with you
We draw it, with the wording, the shape and any carving you want. You see it before anything is cut. Custom requests are welcome, and lettering is included in the price, not added to it.
We make it here
Cut and engraved at our own Rock Hill plant. Made in the USA, by a member of the family, not ordered in and passed along.
We bring it and set it
A Gaulden installs it. Cemetery shipping anywhere in the United States is free, so wherever the person you lost is buried, the stone reaches them.
The lettering is not an extra.
Families are often surprised by this one. There is no additional cost for engraving. The price of a memorial includes the words on it.
Carving, emblems, portraits of a dog, a hymn line, a shape cut to your own drawing: we welcome custom work, and a great deal of what we make is custom. If you can describe it, ask us whether it can be cut.
The ones people do not know to ask for.
Not every memorial is an upright stone in a cemetery row. These are made with the same care, and asked about far less often than they should be.

The things nobody tells you.
Is there an extra cost for the engraving?
No. The price of engraving is included. The lettering on the stone is part of the memorial, not an addition to the bill.
What does a memorial cost?
It depends on the size the cemetery permits, the granite or bronze you choose, and how much carving it carries. We would rather give you a real figure for what you actually have in mind than a number on a page that turns out not to apply to you.
Tell us roughly what you are thinking of and where, and we will price it honestly. There is no obligation, and we will not chase you afterwards.
Can you make something that is not in the shop?
Yes, and we welcome it. Custom monuments are a large part of what we do. Call any showroom, or the Rock Hill office on (803) 327-2760, and one of our experienced people will walk you through it.
We are not near one of your showrooms. Can you still help?
Yes. Cemetery shipping is free anywhere in the United States. We began in the Carolinas and we still serve them, but families across the country now order from us through the online shop and the design editor.
Who actually makes it?
We do. Every memorial is designed, engraved and installed by a member of the Gaulden family, at our own plant in Rock Hill. It is made in the USA. Nothing is passed to a third party and returned with our name on it.
Do I have to decide everything now?
No. Some families order within the week and some take months. Some come to us long before there is any need at all, so it is settled and no one has to face it later. All of that is ordinary here. Come in and look, and go home again if you are not ready.
Somewhere near you, with the stones in front of you.
Choosing a memorial from a screen is hard. Standing beside one, running your hand along the edge and seeing the granite in daylight, is not. Come and do that.

Members of the Monument Builders of North America and of the Carolinas.
Ask us anything, including what it costs.
You will reach the family. Ask the awkward questions, the ones about money and about how long it takes. Nobody here minds them, and everybody asks them.
If you would rather not write anything yet, just call. It is often easier to say out loud than to type.
